Vandalia, Ohio – 2017 Annual Report

Enhancing Pollinator Health & Habitat

The Vandalia Bee City USA Affiliate was accepted into the national program December 8, 2016.

In addition, the Historical Society of Vandalia-Butler purchased 25 Midwest Wildflower Seed Mix packets and  made them available to the community, at a reduced cost, at Farmers Markets events, Society Open House events, other community events and to our local Aullwood Audubon Society Center and Farm. The Society grounds include a herb garden, several flower gardens and new in 2017 was a 20’X20′ vegetable garden. We also started a pollinator friendly garden at a 300 sq, ft. area that connects, via a walking bridge, the Society grounds to the City Art Park. A shallow stream runs under the bridge.

Policies & Practices

The Vandalia Bee City USA Affiliate Committee reports to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board at a monthly meeting held the third Wednesday of each month. The Parks and Recreation Advisory Board is responsible for making recommendations to Council for the planning of recreational facilities and programs, registrations for their use and supervision and equipment. They review suggestions made by citizens and oversee the Baseball/Softball Commission and the Youth Soccer Commission. Five members are appointed by Council and one member is appointed by the Board of Education. Members serve without compensation for four years. The Vandalia Bee City USA Committee currently consists of three members of the Historical Society of Vandalia-Butler supported by a City liaison and a City Coordinator.

Education & Outreach

The Society had an information booth at the Butler Township Bicentennial and held three pollinator educational sessions for local boy and girl scout troops. We had a special “Pollinator Gardening” demonstration at our Society June Open House presented by master gardener and committee member Mary Geiger. Our committee chair, Al Tuttle, participated and spoke at several organization meetings, where pollinator topics were being shared and discussed. Our committee is currently working on a 2018 Pollinator Plan with anticipated involvement in a local Pollinator Expo to be held during National Pollinator Week.
