Enhancing Pollinator Health & Habitat
In June of 2016, Anne Arundel County, the City of Annapolis and the Town of Highland Beach came together in a unique partnership to be certified as a Bee City USA group. We are committed to enhancing pollinator health and habitat through a variety of means. We focus on education and outreach to create awareness of our pollinators, and also work to encourage citizens to plant pollinator gardens/habitat. We have just recently received signage to place at pollinator gardens and will create a database of gardens to track our progress. We do a number of educational outreach events each year. Our Bee City USA Citizen Group meets quarterly.
Policies & Practices
Our Bee City USA Citizens Advisory Group Meets quarterly. We review our goals and determine future events to promote awareness of pollinators. We have also partnered with county businesses, such as Homestead Gardens and various county governmental agencies as well. It is our desire to continue building these partnerships that will help us continue to grow this program.
Education & Outreach
In April 2017, Bee City Anne Arundel hosted a “Pollinator Party” at Homestead Gardens. This event included presentations from the President of the Anne Arundel Bee Keepers Association, Nursery Manager at Homestead Gardens and a Horticulturist at Homestead Gardens. We offered tasty treats courtesy of our pollinators along with educational exhibits from various organizations.
In September, we displayed Bee City USA program information along with educational materials at the Anne Arundel County Fair. Because of high foot traffic, we were able to reach a large number of constituents and educate them on pollinators and their importance.
The City of Annapolis has included pollinator education mateirals at their annual Greenscape event.
We have created a Bee City USA tabletop banner and with that and educational materials continue to educate and promote on pollinators at all our agricultural exhibits/events.
